Europa Danse: Picasso & La Danse
On the occasion of Ballets Russe´s centenary
“Young artists diabolically lively and delightfully elegant, evoke admiration. The four ballets incorporating sets and costumes designed by the artist Pablo Picasso, is a unique event not to be missed. This selection of ballets titled “Picasso and Dance” is a little marvel, a delight for the eyes and an event that leaves you feeling excessively happy.” Danser
Created in 1999, Europa Danse allows young European dancers to make the link between the end of their studies and the entrance into the professional world.
Picasso & La Danse
Parade (1917)
Pulcinella (1920)
Mercure (1924)
Cuadro Flamenco (1921)
The show Picasso & la Danse presents four ballets of which the painter composed the scenographies and often profoundly effected the spirit. Parade, with its absurd costumes created at the heart of wartime in 1917, is a veritable cubist manifesto. Pulcinella, created in 1920, has been completely reconstructed by Ana Maria Stekelman, who composed a charming neoclassical ballet based on the music of Stravinsky. Inspired by Mercure, created in 1924, Thierry Malandain has devised a modern fantasy which is very close to the spirit which Picasso wanted to imprint upon it in his days. Cuadro flamenco finally, is a recital of Spanish dances, performed here by young students from the Madrid Conservatoire.
An exemplary production by Europa Danse represented by BPB- 22 new talents, plus Picasso - a rejuvenating experience!
