Deborah Colker’s dancer’s float and fly as they delineate the dimensions of the space; as light as feathers they can also move at breakneck speed. This is characteristic too of Cruel, a showpiece with picturesque dance interludes. Using light-hearted playfulness and acrobatic perfection, this choreography swings between aesthetics and the abyss: beneath the thinnest veneer of convention a cruel reality is uncovered. The choreographer exposes the entire spectrum of the all too human: expedience and passion, love and madness, egoism and empathy.
